Colchester West End Bowls Club Visit

Thursday 18th and Friday 19th September:
A party of players and guests from Colchester West End BC made their way to Welby Road to play in two matches during the two day visit.
On the Thursday afternoon a match of 3 triples rinks was played over 18 ends. CWEBC came out on top in the match winning 2 of the rinks and having a superior shots score of 57 - 38. HSBC's only winning rink, by 19 shots to 14, was won by George Butler, Evelyn Underwood and Eric Faulconbridge playing John McKay, Anne Wright and Sue McKay.
Other rink scores: Anne Spaulding, Byron James and Fred Thorpe v. Steve Warner, Martin Kempsall and Colleen Moss 12-19; Pat Francis, Viv James and Bob Penny v. John Marshall, Gen McCrory and Ian Reeves 7-24.
A match of 5 rinks of Australian Pairs was played on Friday morning over 16 ends. HSBC faired slightly better in the game that was not too well known to the CWEBC players, by winning 3 of the rinks, but lost the overall shot score by 52 - 64. HSBC's top winning rink went to Pat Francis and Fred Thorpe who beat Anne Wright and Ian Reeves 15-7.
Other rink scores: Joy Penny and Eric Faulconbridge v. Gen McCrory and John Marshall 14-9; Clive and Evelyn Underwood v. Martin Kempsall and Bob Penny (Sub) 11-10; Geoff Rudkin and Anne Spaulding v. John and Sue McKay 6-18; Glenise Marshall and Harold Cramp v. Steve Warner and Colleen Moss 6-20.
A social get together and delicious lunch was enjoyed by both teams after the Friday morning match. Bob Penny, who played for CWEBC before joining HSBC, thanked their members for making the short visit to play on our green, and hoped that a reverse match could be arranged in Colchester next year, giving HSBC a chance of revenge.
